INITIAL IDEAS 7 - Considered practical issues - Tangled

  • Actors
  • Props
  • Location
  • Weather
Actors:
I had first decided to have my little sister to do the music video, this was because the audience for this would have been her age range and also she has a great interest in Disney princesses, especially the ones from Frozen and Tangled. Therefore, I thought it will be best to have someone who has an interest within the theme to then present this while making the video.

However, as she is only 7 years old, I thought that she may not be able to follow the steps needed accurately. The understanding of a 7 year old will not be as advanced to someone the age of Rapunzel who is a teenager within the movie.

I had then decided that my elder sister could play the role of Rapunzel instead. Also as i will find it easier to do makeup on her and find costume that will suit her as we have the same clothing size. But as she wears the hijab, filming this song will not be possible to do without showing the hair as the character's main feature is the hair and also the use of flowers. Also, as the video will be shown to others and put on YouTube as well therefore, it would be ideal if I change the actor to someone else.

And so now I have decided to get one of my friend to act as Rapunzel instead, as she is comfortable with the costume and hair etc. therefore she will best suit the role.

Props:
The video is all about lights and they use lanterns to present this as one of the main part of the movie is about the lanterns that are lit when it is the character's birthday. But as the word "lantern" is not used within the lyrics of the song, it refers to lights in general and so I am planning to use other little lights such as mini chandeliers which are all attached together with a wire and other lamps. Also candles will be used quite largely because this creates a more "magical" and warm  feeling.

This can vary from little tea light candles to vases with candles inside it. Other props such as scarves will be draped around the area as well to emphasis the "princessy" theme. This will also allow the character to interact with the different props. And other little bits and bobs can be used such as flowers, gems and sequins to again bring out the whole fantasy and magical effect. These can be placed around the area as well as placed on the character such as in the hair or having them in the hand etc.

Location:

This will be recorded in my bedroom, this has strengths as well as some weaknesses. The place is where I do not have to worry about any costs, free times or any difficulty in getting there. Also as my bedroom already has many of the props that I will be using, but will be less hassle for me to organise the area.

However, there are some bad points such as the use of candles, I will need to be aware of the hazards that can be caused and so I will need to prepare the area in a way that these dangers do not occur. The props such as scarves will need to be out the way of the candles around the room.

I will also be filming some parts outside such as the river and bridge to get a variety of locations and shots.

Weather:

I will be creating the video indoors as well as outside therefore the weather conditions will need to be considered and also the timing of when i will be recording outside has an impact on the video. Due to the song being based on about lights therefore, candles and little lights will be used indoors and so filming in the dark will give a more intense effect.

Also when filming outside would mean that I will not be able to do so if it is raining as it will not work well and also issues such as the camera getting wet. If I film during the evening in order to get the bridge lights recorded and having any lights used to make it seem brighter would mean the temperature will be much cooler. And so clothing will need to be considered with the weather.

INITIAL IDEAS 6 - Location/Props/Costume ideas - Tangled

Below is an outline of one of the location that will be used for the music video, it will be my bedroom therefore I have structured the lines and boxes in a way to match my bedroom layout. This would help me to organise where I will be placing certain props that will be used.

As the song is all about lights, I have decided to use candles and little hanging lights. This will still create the "princess-like" look and create a warm feeling. The candles will be placed around the room in various places such as; the dressing table, shelves and window sill. I may also be planning to place some on the floor, however there are safety restrictions and so I may not consider doing this.

I will be using a few props which are candles, little lights, flowers and scarves. The candles are a major part in the music video as the song is about "lights", in the movie they had used lanterns but as I will be doing it indoors therefore, candles will work best. The little lights will be around the window and also two lamps that have small holes in to create a more elegant look will help in brightening the scene without using too many candles. The flowers are also quite important as the character has them in her hair as well as "playing" with them while waiting for the lanterns to appear. And so I thought the flowers can be placed around the room and in the characters hair, also while singing she can be playing with the flowers as well. The scarves will be draped around the room, this can be pinned on the ceiling and placed over the bed and over the units. This creates a more girly and "magical" feel

INITIAL IDEAS 5 - Questionnaire - Tangled

INITIAL IDEAS 4 - Target Audience - Tangled

My target audience are young girls from age 0-12 year olds, as they are interested in princesses and Disney. However the audience may vary due to older people also having an interest in Disney and the fantasy stories.

The reason being for young girls having an interest in princesses is because of the dress style and the personality shown within the story. The big fancy dresses that is filled with gems and sparkle, the diamond tiaras, the heels and sometimes a wand. This fascinates young girls as they too wish to have such dresses and makeup as it is very girly and "magical" looking.

The personality of princesses are always positive and loving characters who take care and are very elegant and loyal. Their posture is always straight and expressions most of the time are happy, this further interests the audience as it connects to them and makes them feel positive.

All princess stories have connection to love, either the princess searching for love or the prince. This makes little girls feel special as they too believe in a prince charming who will always protect them. This gives little girls the impression of loving one another and looking after one another. This also gives positive knowledge to the younger generation as the personality of these princesses will affect the children.

However, some may disagree as they feel that it is giving a bad influence on the younger generation, as this is teaching them to have a "prince charming" from such a young age. Also scenes of love and affection from the prince towards the princess, can sometimes be "too much" for children.

But majority will see the idea of seeing the life of a princess positively, as this teaches children to become a good person who does not have anger or hatred towards anyone, but spread peace and love. This also helps children to know how to respectfully speak to their parents and teachers as many princesses in the movies portray this by always obeying their elders.

Below are some images of the target audience dressed up as characters from Disney, majority of the costumes and props of princesses are to a size for young children as it is specifically aimed at them. But there are some places where costumes can be found in sizes for adults too.

INITIAL IDEAS 3 - Artist/Production Company/Record Label - Tangled

"See the light", is a song which was written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater for Walt Disney Animation Studios film Tangled (2010). A duet originally recorded the song which was by American recording artist and actress Mandy Moore and American actor Zachary Levi as they were doing the main roles of the characters Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.

Lyrically, the song describes the developing romantic relationship between the two characters, this is the movie's love and theme song. This is a very gentle, simple and folk-oriented song, this has inspired a positive reception from film and music critics.

Composition; a "dreamy" love song that embodies a "classic romantic feel", it is a peppy and cheerful pop ballad accompanied by a "soaring" melody that spans a length of three minutes and forty-four seconds. Combining both classical and contemporary music with folk influences, the lyrics of the "endearing" romantic duet center around the characters while describing their developing relationship.

INITIAL IDEAS 1 - Mood board - Tangled

This is the second mood board I have created, it is a Tangled based collage that has images from the song scene, the costumes that I may use, any props that will be needed and the colour scheme of the song will help with the background or makeup. As the song is about lights, there are a lot of lanterns in the song therefore, candles can be used instead and little lights.

INITIAL IDEAS 1 - Mood board - Frozen

This is the first mood board I have created, it is a Frozen based collage that consists of images from the song scene as well as costumes that I am thinking of using, and props such as cotton wool and beads/gems that would work with the whole "icy" effect. Also, I have blocks of colours that give me an idea of what sort of colour theme will be needed.
